NORTH RIDGEVILLE — The defeat of an $8 million bond issue last month to fund the city’s share of the $67 million widening and improvement of Center Ridge and Lear Nagle roads hasn’t stalled the acquisition of properties needed for work to proceed.
Jim and Sandy Hales, longtime owners of Hales Florist and Greenhouse, are a prime example.
A fixture at the intersection of Center Ridge and Lear-Nagle roads since its opening by original florist-owner John Van Arsdale in 1902, the business sits at the eastern terminus of the huge project that city officials say is still on track despite voters’ narrow rejection of the bond issue by 143 votes Nov. 4.
For the Hales, who took over the business on Mother’s Day weekend in 1960, progress is a hard pill to swallow.
